چکیده

32 ABSTRACT Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is one of the most common comorbidities in patients with systolic heart failure. CSA is a manifestation of respiratory control instability that occurs in advanced systolic dysfunction, and can negatively impact the prognosis of heart failure patients. Innovative therapeutic approaches have been introduced and are showing efficacy and positive effect on cardiac function. The increasing incidence of heart failure and its persistent economic and human burden require the cardiology clinician to maintain sufficient understanding of this common comorbidity in heart failure. In this review, we will discuss the treatment of CSA with focus on the most recent advances and therapeutic approaches.

Central Sleep Apnea in Heart Failure: Clinical Implications, Recognition, and Management

Central sleep apnea (CSA) is characterized by a lack of respiratory drive during sleep, resulting in repetitive periods of insufficient ventilation and compromised gas exchange. These nighttime breathing disturbances can lead to daytime impairment and poor cardiovascular outcomes. There are several types of CSA, including idiopathic CSA, high altitude-induced periodic breathing, obesity hypoven...

Paediatric origins of adult lung diseases

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and central sleep apnoea have been identified and described in adults, children, and infants. It is not certain, however, if the adult sleep apnoea syndromes, particularly OSA, originate from childhood or whether paediatric and adult sleep apnoea are separate syndromes. Some investigators have suggested that the pathophysiology, criteria for diagnosis, and the man...

Obesity hypoventilation syndrome: a review of epidemiology, pathophysiology, and perioperative considerations.

Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) is defined by the triad of obesity, daytime hypoventilation, and sleep-disordered breathing without an alternative neuromuscular, mechanical, or metabolic cause of hypoventilation. It is a disease entity distinct from simple obesity and obstructive sleep apnea. OHS is often undiagnosed but its prevalence is estimated to be 10-20% in obese patients with obs...

Evaluation of Berlin Questionnaire Validity for Sleep Apnea Risk in Sleep Clinic Populations

Introduction: The Berlin questionnaire (BQ) is a common tool to screen for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in the general population, but its application in the clinical sleep setting is still challenging. The aim of this study was to determine the specificity and sensitivity of the BQ compared to the apnea-hypopnea index obtained from polysomnography recordings obtained from ...
